WomenBuild

Real women like a real challenge. Two volunteers participate in the framing process.Twin Cities Habitat's eighth WomenBuild project provides the opportunity for hundreads of women—of all ages, backgrounds and skill sets—to take a hands-on approach to solving the affordable housing crisis, by coming together—as volunteers and donors—and building a simple, decent home for a hard-working, low-income family in the Twin Cities.

At WomenBuild 2008:

  • Women will provide all labor and leadership—from framing to landscaping—in a supportive and empowering environment.
  • Women will step out of their comfort zone, acquire new skills, make new friends and discover unexpected strengths.
  • The vast volunteer pool of women in the Twin Cities will mobilize—better equipping us to tackle the growing need for affordable housing across the seven-county region.
  • The dream of affordable, sustainable homeownership will become a reality for one of the many area families in desperate need of stable housing for their children.
  • Participants will make a lasting difference to themselves, to a partner family and to the Twin Cities community. It doesn't get any better than that.

No current construction skills? No worries. Training is provided. The project will be supervised—start to finish—by an experienced female site supervisor from the Twin Cities Habitat staff.

WomenBuild 2008 will be held in partnership with WomenVenture's Jobs in the Trades program by providing a practicum experience for women learning the home construction trade.

Kick it up a notch: Team Leader Days

Team Leader Days provide a chance to change your community—and leave your friends wondering why you get to wear the biggest hard hat.

Its easy.

  • Recruit 13 friends or colleagues; they will be the sole construction crew for your day.
  • Raise $1,500 to fund your day's volunteer work
  • Be creative: invite your book club, organize the women's council at your workplace, sell your husband's golf clubs. It's all good.

You and your team will attempt new tasks, rejoice in each other's strengths and provide one more family with a solid foundation for the future.

To schedule your Team Leader Day, contact the coordinator at 612-331-4090 ext. 638 or send e-mail to womenbuild@tchabitat.org. But hurry; Team Leader Days go fast.
