Brenda Carson-Lawless, executive director of Mobile Habitat, is overjoyed about TCHFH’s partnership with her community and says she feels blessed that we recognize their incredible need and have not forgotten about them. In October 2005, four previous OHD houses were built at TCHFH’s warehouse in northeast Minneapolis. In late October a special build was held at Upper Landing Park in St. Paul, where a fifth house was prepared—walls were raised, sheathing was added and trusses were erected by a large team of volunteers. The event was covered by all local television affiliates and the NBC Today Show. All five houses traveled by barge to Slidell, LA, where they were reassembled on pre-existing slabs. Months after the waters of Hurricane Katrina receded, Habitat for Humanity International’s Operation Home Delivery (OHD) program is still going strong. Twin Cities Habitat’s most current response to the devastation is the construction and delivery of 11 homes to the Habitat affiliate in Mobile, Ala. Once the houses are in Mobile, they will be completed on site during a blitz build the week of May 8.
