In-Kind donations contribute creatively to Habitat projects PDF Print E-mail

When people hear of Habitat for Humanity and in-kind donations, they usually think of construction supplies.  But there are several valuable, unconventional ways to make in-kind donations to TCHFH both on the construction site and off.

In-kind donations have even been part of high-profile projects like Operation Home Delivery.  The barge service that transported the four homes to Slidell, Louisiana was donated.  Other donated services and goods include electrical contractors and subcontractors, trucking, construction site security, safety equipment, plants and shrubs, tool rental and waste removal.

“We are blessed with a great many professionals and service providers who do things for us that we cannot do for ourselves, such as crane services that put trusses on multiple story townhomes, refuse haulers, carpet layers and skilled subcontractors.  These construction partners have a tremendously positive impact on our work,” said John Davis, In-kind Donations Manager.

Sometimes in-kind donations do not involve construction-related goods or services at all.

Last fall, Douglas Peters, president of DS Performance Group, donated his services to TCHFH.  Peters offers training, coaching, teambuilding and organizational development skills to companies and organizations that want to maximize their performance.

“After Katrina, I decided I wanted to do something.  I offered my services at no charge to Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.   Since Habitat was one of the first organizations to respond to the hurricane, it seemed like a creative way for me to contribute to relief efforts,” said Peters.

Over the course of five sessions, Peters’ “Working Together Better” training addressed personal and interpersonal effectiveness, how to work through personality conflicts, and ways to improve work relations.

“Our staff got a lot out of this.  This training was terrific.  Our staff learned about themselves, and in the process, learned how to work more effectively as a team,” said Susan Haigh, president of TCHFH.
