Maximizing your volunteer experience on multi-unit sites PDF Print E-mail

During the 2006 Workcamp season, TCHFH participated in several multi-unit builds metro wide, including sites in Woodbury, Minneapolis, Wayzata and St. Paul.  As building models adjust, the support of volunteers is essential.  New opportunities often present new challenges.  If your group works on a multi-unit build, take the following steps to ensure the experience will be rewarding:

  • Carpool to the site for easier parking.
  • Choose a place for your group to meet every morning.
  • Multi-unit sites are busy work environments.  Make sure that your group’s Project Managers and Crew Leaders are identified to the lead site supervisors.
  • Take time over lunch to learn about all of the groups on site.  Share stories about your experiences and your interest in affordable housing.
  • Be intentional about meeting all of the homebuyers on site; learn about their lives and take time to listen to their stories.

If you coordinate a volunteer group, talk with participants beforehand about the differences involved with multi-unit builds.  With the flexibility of dedicated volunteers, TCHFH can continue working to ensure every person has a decent, affordable place to live.
