New 20-unit development in Oakdale coming soon PDF Print E-mail

As new and exciting housing opportunities arise in suburban communities, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH) has been expanding the number of cities in which it builds.  A great example of such a partnership is in the City of Oakdale, where TCHFH has plans to build four 5-unit rowhouses, with construction due to begin in late 2007.

This latest addition to the Twin Cities Habitat family will be a part of the 126-unit Red Oak Preserve on the site of the former Whispering Oaks Manufactured Home Park.  This development has been spearheaded by the Washington County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA) and will combine a number of different housing uses and incomes.

In addition to Habitat's 20 new owner-occupied townhomes, single-family homes will be built and sold by the Ryland Group and the Two Rivers Community Land Trust.  Senior and affordable rental opportunities will be made possible in apartments and townhomes managed by Shelter Corporation.  Of Red Oak Preserve's 126 new units of housing opportunities, 93 will be affordable to low- and moderate-income families.

"One of the major goals of Red Oak Preserve was to promote ‘life-cycle housing' because the size and location of the property was perfect for a mixture of housing types.  This project will be an excellent example of a mixed-income residential community because families will be able to move from rental housing to homeownership opportunities right across the street, as well as provide an opportunity for households that want to "downsize" and move into senior housing," said Barbara Dacy, Washington County HRA Executive Director.

Dacy also noted that "the Board of Commissioners of the HRA very much appreciates the involvement of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity in the project, and the willingness to work with families who currently live on the site in manufactured homes."
