Habitat Historic Home opens (KARE-11) PDF Print E-mail

Ripley Gardens in North Minneapolis is finally open. The project was started a little more than a year ago and is significant for two reasons. It is not only an historic site, it also marks a new era for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

With the cost of land increasing, Twin Cities Habitiat has had to look for ways to stretch its dollars. The organization is doing that by building multi-unit housing facilities.

Ripley Gardens is the perfect example of that policy. The site holds 52 rental units and eight owner-occupied townhomes.

The rental units were a combined project with Central Community Housing Trust. They have hired a company to rent and manage the site.

The eight townhomes are a Habitat project and the families will hopefully get to move in by the end of October.

The project is also unique because it is an historic site. Ripley Gardens is on the National Historic Registry and was originally a maternity hospital. The hospital was started by Dr. Martha Ripley back in the 1890's.

All construction had to follow strict historic guidlines and new buildings had to be made to fit in with the existing historic buildings on the grounds.

If you're interested, the new project is on the corner of Penn and Glenwood in North Minneapolis.
