Volunteers help Habitat (Sun Newspapers) PDF Print E-mail

To the editor:

The Sept. 20 story on the emerging relationship between Brooklyn Park and Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity was a real day brightener. My compliments to all involved for providing the leadership necessary to foster this new and important partnership.

However, there is one oversight (probably unintentional) that needs to be corrected. As stated, the sweat equity of the prospective homeowners and the EDA grant subsidies for land acquisition do contribute to the affordability of Habitat constructed homes. However, another very significant factor in keeping the costs down is the skilled and unskilled labor contributed by Habitat's many volunteer workers - a number of them residents of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park and our surrounding communities. Through Habitat, these dedicated folks have quietly been doing a marvelous job in our part of the metro region for more than 15 years.
