Volunteer Services - Service Immersion Facilitator PDF Print E-mail

Service Immersion Facilitators help with the planning and execution of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity Service Immersion Days and other service-learning opportunities for youth volunteers. Service Immersion Days are usually on Saturdays and consist of a 1.5-hour orientation session, 6 hours of work on site, and a 1-hour reflection session.

Responsibilities

  • Work with groups of youth and adult Habitat volunteers through orientation and reflection sessions following the TCHFH curriculum. Reflection sessions explore issues of poverty and service through group discussions. Service Immersion volunteers may also choose to spend the rest of the day working on a Habitat construction site alongside the volunteer group.
  • Attend monthly committee meetings for continued training and program planning

Volunteer Impact

Through this program, volunteers will challenge young people to examine their own assumptions and beliefs about service, housing, and poverty. Volunteers will also help them reflect on how their individual actions affect the wider community. This type of experience will provide young Habitat volunteers with the skills needed to contribute to our community for many years.

Skills

Must be comfortable working with people ages 14–22 and have an energetic and open-minded attitude. Preferences include volunteers who have experience in managing groups, teaching, and/or possess knowledge of Habitat for Humanity and poverty issues.

Time Commitment

  • A minimum of nine months
  • Work a minimum of one Saturday every other month from 7:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. (volunteer can choose to take a break from 10:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. if necessary.)
  • Attend meetings/trainings one evening per month for 1.5 hours.

Training and Supervision

Provided by the Volunteer Coordinator for youth/college programs. Initial training includes attending a 4-hour Saturday training session, and attending a Service Immersion Day
