Communication & Events - Habitat Herald Writer PDF Print E-mail

Writers for the Habitat Herald meet quarterly at Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity to discuss content for the next issue. This publication helps organization to highlight specific subjects, people and events, to educate the reader on aspects of the organization and discuss issues of affordable housing in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Each writer is assigned one or more articles. Writers gather information about the topic through personal observation, library or Internet research, interviews and/or documentation provided at the meeting. Writers then select and organize the material and write to express ideas, convey information and tell a story. Writers also may need to revise in order to communicate the clearest message and to keep their assigned articles to the necessary length.

Responsibilities

Writers attend four Habitat Herald meetings; one prior to the publication of each edition of the Habitat Herald newsletter and will review and recommend articles on specific topics as necessary. Each writer is assigned articles for the newsletter to be completed and given to the editor by the due date. Writers will also evaluate the format and content of the newsletter, bringing suggestions to the quarterly Habitat Herald meeting, and will assist in evaluating the cost and income of the newsletter at the end of the year.

Volunteer and Organizational Impact

Newsletter writers are essential to producing four Habitat Heralds each year that are distributed to approximately 20,000 current volunteers and donors in the TCHFH database. Donation envelopes, included in each newsletter, have historically resulted in $150,000+ in donations to Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity each year.

Skills

Preference for volunteers who have experience in writing and editing, as well as those who have previously volunteered on a Twin Cities Habitat construction site.

Time Commitment

  • Four meetings per year to discuss upcoming issues.
