The Metropolitan Council has identified 20 growing communities in the seven-county area that will need more than 900 new units of affordable housing before 2020. Thirteen of those communities are in Anoka, Carver, Dakota, Scott, and Washington Counties-communities where we are building. Building homes in these growing communities allows Habitat to work with cities and counties who see the need for affordable housing and will fund land acquisition and infrastructure costs to meet their goals. Centex's Bailey's Arbor development in Woodbury is an example of an opportunity in which municipal, county and private resources lead to Habitat building 30 townhomes. We needed everyone at the table: The city of Woodbury, Washington County, and Centex. Partnerships like this are critical to the growth of Habitat's work in the Twin Cities. We will work differently in Minneapolis and St. Paul then we did years ago. To make the best use of available land and resources in the central cities, we will build more multi-unit homes in targeted developments. We will work to preserve homeownership through our A Brush With Kindness program, which helps low-income homeowners in need of home repair, and through our Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program that serves homeowners in the city of Minneapolis who have fallen behind with their mortgage payments. A need for affordable housing exists across the Twin Cities. Being able to partner not only helps introduce Habitat to new friends, but also helps communities meet their important housing goals. "Habitat's activities in the Twin Cities play a crucial role in expanding the diversity of housing options across the metropolitan area," explained Minnesota Housing Commissioner Tim Marx. "Additionally, I like Habitat's commitment to [building] its homes near jobs, transportation and schools." Twin Cities Habitat works hard to provide affordable housing solutions that are environmentally sustainable and connect families to the communities in which they live, work and attend school. Whether in the city or suburb, our strategies focus on seeking out shared opportunities for our neighborhoods and communities, and for the hard-working families we serve. |

So, you might be wondering, "Why does Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity build in so many places?" The answers are as varied as the towns we build in.
