Guidelines for Volunteers |
|
|
|
|
Please review and distribute these guidelines to all volunteers before your scheduled volunteer experience.
During the Day
- Arrive on site on time and plan to stay for the entire day. Let your group organizer know if you won't be able to come as scheduled. Try to give plenty of notice so we can make other arrangements.
- The work day begins at 8:30, with a morning break, a ½ hour lunch break, an afternoon break, and ends at 4:00.
- Habitat does not provide lunch or snacks. If your group is not providing lunch, please bring your own food.
- Drinking water and restroom facilities will be provided on site.
Sign-in
Remember to sign in on the time sheets and waiver forms provided at the site each time you work (or complete your waiver ahead of time on line). The volunteer logbooks are important for our record-keeping. Write your name and address legibly in the logbook to ensure that your information is properly recorded.
Tools
- Tools are available on site, but it can be helpful to bring your own. We suggest: a tool belt with a hammer, tape measure, utility knife, and pencil. Remember to label your tools.
- If you bring power tools, do not allow others to use them without the Site Supervisor's permission.
Personal Items
- Wear work boots or sneakers that are slip resistant and fully enclose the foot. Open-toes and open heeled shoes are not allowed on site.
- We work rain, shine or snow. Wear a hat and clothes that you won't mind tearing or staining. Dress in layers so that you can add or subtract depending on weather conditions.
- Work gloves, goggles and hard hats are provided, but you may bring your own.
Medical / Emergencies
- Get a tetanus shot if necessary. Adults need a booster every ten years.
- Let the Site Supervisor know if you have any medical condition of which Habitat should be aware, such as specific allergies, asthma, heart problems, etc.
- A first-aid kit will be available on site as well as a telephone for emergency use.
- Should you need to be reached in case of an emergency, our office can forward any information to the work site. Please call 612-331-4090.
Youth
For safety reasons, children under the age of 14 are not allowed on-site. Teenagers 14 - 15 must have one-to-one supervision from a parent or adult friend. We require one adult crew leader for every four 16 or 17 year-olds working on site. 18 year-olds do not need supervision, but they cannot act as supervisors for younger people. All high school groups, even if their volunteers are 18 years-old, will need to have at least one adult for every four students.
