Many politicians are using their time here in Minnesota to volunteer. Some are helping build a home for the less fortunate right here in St. Paul. For the past few days, volunteer pages have been working the convention floor. Today they took off their dress clothes and went to work building affordable housing. 40 college-aged kids from across the country spent the afternoon painting, staining and learning the finer points of drywall. The homes are being built by Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit whose mission is affordable housing. For Habitat it's a chance to help teach a whole new generation of leaders within the party about what it means to not have a home and how everyone deserves a safe, decent and affordable home. Margaret Jones will be buying a Habitat home in February. A 30-year-old single mother of three, Margaret is now back in college enrolled at St. Kate's hoping for a career in social work. "I wanted to see if I could become a homeowner. With the interest rates that are high, it's kind of hard to afford a house. I applied three times for Habitat. My third time, I got accepted." Like all Habitat homeowners, she's working off 300 hours with the nonprofit. "I think it's awesome with Habitat being a nonprofit organization. They need volunteers to help them." Habitat broke ground on the seven-unit complex back in April. They expect to have it completed within the next three-to-four months.
