Sarah Harris

My name is Sarah Harris. I was born in Oxford, England and moved to Rochester, MN when I was 7 years old. I moved to Saint Paul, MN in 2010 to attend the University of St. Thomas. I graduated in May of 2014 with a degree in Social Work and a minor in Psychology. I love to travel and have family that lives all over the world; I hope to visit family in India and Australia next! I have always been interested in working with youth and creating new opportunities for them. As a Youth Engagement VISTA for Habitat I hope to make this a reality!

It has taken nearly ten years of hard work and determination for the Millington Family, but they finally saw their dream come to life in early June with the opening of Madison’s Place. Madison’s Place is the first all-inclusive playground in the East Metro; a playground where children of all ages and all abilities are able to play together.

This semester, Minnetonka Vantage students are partnering with Avalon Charter School students to develop a youth engagement project that we can take out to elementary schools and complete with students. Minnetonka Vantage is program where high school students partner with businesses to complete real life business projects. Avalon is a project-based charter school in Saint Paul; the project based learning style empowers students, teaches time-management, and gives the students freedom to work on something they are passionate about. This is the first project that Minnetonka and Avalon have partnered together on.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (MLK Day), is a federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.  The holiday was signed into law in 1983, and takes place annually on the 3rd Monday in January. This year, MLK Day is on January 18th.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'”

To honor Dr. King's work, the holiday has been declared a day of service in the United States. This gives people a chance to come together to strengthen their neighborhoods and communities. As many businesses and schools are closed, families and friends have the opportunity to volunteer together.

On October 3rd, Habitat in partnership with Frogtown Neighborhood Association, Veteran’s Voices, and Frogtown Rondo Home Fund and with funding through Thrivent Financial, will be hosting the first ever hosting the first ever Garage-A-Palooza. In the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul, we will be painting and repairing 6 garages all in one day while also hosting a neighborhood clean-up. In addition, a community celebration with a brief kickoff program, food, music, and fun community events will take place.
