A Special Gift for Mother's Day

As you know, Mother’s Day is a special time to reflect on the amazing relationships between mothers and their families. At Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, we often work with mothers in dire need of quality, affordable housing who are working hard to provide a more stable environment for their loved ones. Through homeownership opportunities, Habitat is able to provide a foundation for our partner families, giving them the building blocks to improve their education, health, relationships and careers.

Improving the lives of mothers and their families inspires us to keep working hard, every day.

The Petties family is one such story. Kenisha Petties’ daughter, Khalilah, was born with an extremely rare form of spina bifida, making it very challenging for her to walk. The Petties were renting a townhome filled with stairs that made the house difficult to live in for Khalilah, dramatically reducing her quality of life and making even just walking upstairs to her room a perilous proposition.

Thankfully, all that changed in November 2012. After two years of hard work and smart budgeting from Kenisha, the family closed on a home in Fridley that was specially designed to meet Khalilah’s unique needs. Twin Cities Habitat partnered with Access Solutions, a company that designs specialized living spaces, to make the home a place Khalilah can thrive.

Our mission isn’t only about putting roofs over heads, it’s about empowering parents and their children to be successful in everyday life. This Mother's Day, instead of just candy or flowers, give something that makes a lasting impact. Give in honor or memory of your mother. Help another mother create a stable home for her children.

If you make your gift before Wednesday, May 7, we'll be able to send your mother a printed acknowledgement of your gift in time for Mother's Day on Sunday, May 11.
