In 2010, Twin Cities Habitat made a four-year commitment to allocate its tithe to financially support Habitat for Humanity’s work in Haiti, Mozambique and Costa Rica. During that year, Haiti experienced a devastating earthquake that left many homeless. With the help of Twin Cities Habitat tithe funds, Habitat Haiti has constructed 300 permanent homes in the Santo community of Léogâne.
This Haitian community is one that benefits from solar street lighting, but individual homes do not have access to public utilities. Last month, Habitat Haiti, in partnership with SIDDEVAS (the local community council), distributed two Waka Waka solar lights to each of the 300 Habitat families. An additional 300 lights were distributed to families living in one of give International Organization for Migration (IOM) camps across the city. The group also provided training on how to operate the lights.
Through our Tithe program, Habitat partners are not only eliminating poverty housing from their own communities, but also eliminating poverty housing in communities around the world.
