Hearth & Hope's Author-Hosted Book Discussion

Hearth & Hope's Author-Hosted Book Discussion

The LateHomecomer

Last night, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s Hearth & Hope members hosted a book discussion with author Kao Kalia Yang. Kalia shared some excerpts from her book The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir, along with a reading from her soon to be published manuscript.

Author Kao Kalia Yang at the Hearth When Kalia speaks, it is just as beautiful as her writing -- which can, fittingly, only be described with her own words: “when you have so much in your heart, everything feels like poetry.” The intimate discussion gave the group a chance to ask questions about her childhood and path to becoming a writer, her writing process, and the inspiration for her first book – her grandmother. The stories of her grandmother were very personal, and it was evident that her grandmother’s wisdom had rubbed off on her as she explained that she always knew where her home was: "Home is returning to the people who love you; it is a place that is always waiting for you."

Events like the book discussion are why we created Hearth & Hope. Membership offers a variety of meaningful opportunities for women to gather and increase their understanding about how Habitat empowers female family partners, their daughters, our women volunteers and donors. We are committed to building the quality of life, health and economic prosperity of women in our community.
