Support & Celebrate National Homeownership Month

Written by Regina Eckes | 12:13 PM on June 3, 2026

At Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, June is a special month: It's National Homeownership Month! We're proud to celebrate this time dedicated to recognizing the benefits of homeownership, the programs we have available, and our amazing Habitat homeowners. When we come together to support affordable homeownership and racial equity in housing, we can build brighter futures for more local families.

This month, we'll take time to cover a variety of stories, perspectives, and statistics about homeownership, including:

We also can't celebrate homeownership without highlighting our largest development yetThe Heights! This monumental project kicked off in fall 2024, and the first Heights homebuyers moved in last fall. This milestone took years of visioning, planning, and construction, and now families are now turning the keys in their own front doors, marking the start of a new chapter for St. Paul’s Greater East Side.

The Importance of Homeownership

Twin Cities Habitat believes everyone deserves a decent, stable, affordable place to live. Through years of research, we know that stable housing is essential to children's' well-being and also affects child development. We know that affordable housing helps local schools and raises standardized test scores; it helps taxpayers and builds stronger, more vibrant communities. And the physical, mental, and financial benefits of owning a home are life-changing.

Stable, affordable housing is also a significant racial justice issue as Minnesota has one of the worst racial equity gaps in homeownership. Each and every day, Twin Cities Habitat is focused on reducing the barriers to homeownership for people of color who have endured centuries of racist housing policies. And when we improve our programs for those most impacted by housing discrimination, our program will become better for everyone who partners with us.

Habitat Programs

If you or someone you know is interested in homeownership, Twin Cities Habitat may be the right partner, and now is a great time to get to know the programs and services we offer. Since 1985, our Homeownership Program has helped more than 2,000 families achieve stable and affordable housing throughout the seven-county metro area.

Even if someone does not meet our Homeownership Program requirements, we offer Financial Coaching to take steps necessary to become mortgage-ready.

Potential buyers should fill out our Eligibility Form as the first step in the process!
