A Warm ReStore Welcome: Julie’s Volunteer Story

Julie’s volunteer journey with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity ReStore Home Improvement Outlets started when she retired in 2020. Soon after, she moved from Massachusetts to the Twin Cities to be closer to family. She wanted to find something to do to keep herself occupied and to get connected to her new community. While volunteering at another organization, Julie started chatting with another volunteer who happened to also serve at ReStore. After hearing more about the mission and volunteer experience, Julie thought it sounded like a good fit, so she signed up for her first shift in the fall of 2021. Julie enjoyed it so much that she started volunteering one day each week. Now you can find Julie at the Minneapolis ReStore three days of most weeks.

“It motivates me, and it’s a good cause,” she said.

As Julie got more familiar with ReStore over the years, she started to take more ownership of her volunteer role. Julie has organizational career skills that come in handy, but she’s since expanded her skill set and learned new things. She’s even volunteered at Twin Cities Habitat’s annual Hard Hat & Black Tie gala!

One of Julie’s favorite parts of volunteering at ReStore is working with staff and other volunteers—every day is different. She’s made many new friends, and learns from many of those she meets.

“Everyone is friendly and helpful,” she said. “I love it at ReStore. I enjoy the camaraderie and doing something that helps others.”

If you’re thinking about volunteering but aren’t sure where to start, consider joining volunteers like Julie at ReStore for a four-hour shift. As Julie has discovered, ReStore offers a welcoming environment. Staff and other volunteers will show you everything you need to know.

“Volunteers feel very appreciated, and staff are thoughtful,” she said. “The only downside is that I buy too many amazing things for my own home.”

At the end of each volunteer shift, Julie feels satisfied knowing she’s part of something bigger. By volunteering at ReStore, she’s helping more local families access safe, stable, and affordable housing through Twin Cities Habitat.

“Affordable housing is important. Everyone deserves it. But it’s a crisis in our country,” Julie said. “And Habitat is doing something about it.”
