Twin Cities Habitat’s Global Village Tradition

Since Twin Cities Habitat’s inception in 1985, more than $2.4 million has been pledged to build Habitat homes in other countries, making Twin Cities Habitat one of only a handful of affiliates to surpass the $2 million mark in tithe dollars.

In 2010, Twin Cities Habitat made a four-year commitment to allocate its tithe to financially support Habitat for Humanity’s work in Costa Rica and Haiti. In 2013, Twin Cities Habitat announced a new partnership with Habitat in Ethiopia. In addition to financial support, Twin Cities Habitat leads volunteer groups to build in tithe partner countries.  If you would like to be contacted when we start recruiting volunteers for these trips, please email globalvillage@tchabitat.orgWe invite you read below and learn about how Twin Cities Habitat is changing lives in Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Haiti.

    Costa Rica

Though Costa Rica has a fairly stable economy, large government deficits, due to interest payments on exorbitant internal debt, have undermined efforts to maintain the quality of social services. Inflation rates remain at more than 10 percent, while an estimated 35 percent of the population lives in inadequate housing.

Twin Cities Habitat is excited to introduce Habitat for Humanity Ethiopia as our newest tithe partner! In recent years, nearly 47% of our homebuyers here in the Twin Cities have their roots in Ethiopia, and we are looking forward to furthering this connection and improving housing conditions in that country.

On January 12, 2010, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti just 10 miles west of the capital, Port-au-Prince. Thousands of buildings and homes were destroyed. Millions of people were affected and more than 1 million people were left displaced or homeless. No one yet knows when Haiti will be ready to take on volunteer groups so there is no plan currently to include this as a tithe partner trip.
