Building Community Through Bingo: Krista's Habitat Journey

Building Community Through Bingo: Krista's Habitat Journey

When Krista, a Twin Cities real estate agent, set out to find a nonprofit where she could make a meaningful impact, she knew it had to be a cause that spoke to both her heart and her professional values. As someone who guides people through one of the most important decisions of their lives—buying a home—she wanted to support a mission that reflected the power and privilege of homeownership. That search led her to Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity.

“I was looking for an organization that I could really roll up my sleeves with,” Krista said. “Not just show up to meetings but actually do something that made a difference.”

A friend introduced Krista to a Habitat Board member, and soon she was connected with Habitat staff. It didn’t take long before she began putting her energy into a unique idea she had been dreaming about: a Bingo night for her clients and network that would double as a fundraiser for Habitat’s mission.

A Fun Night with Purpose

Krista’s vision for her fundraiser wasn’t just about gathering people for a good time; it was about creating an event that connected her professional network to a cause she cared deeply about. The result was a high-energy, fun-filled evening that exceeded expectations.

Held at the Bloomington Event Center, the Bingo night drew over 100 attendees, including clients Krista had helped buy and sell homes, friends, family, and professional partners. The space was the perfect venue with its built-in Bingo boards and spacious layout. Every guest received a Bingo visor, their own dauber, and a goodie bag, setting the tone for a lively and inclusive evening.

Preston calling BingoOne standout feature? Preston, a Habitat staff member, served as the event’s enthusiastic Bingo caller. “Word on the street was that it was his lifelong dream to be a Bingo caller,” Krista laughed. “Not only did I get to help fulfill that, but he did such an amazing job, I’ve already booked him for next year!”

The event raised nearly $10,000, thanks to Krista’s generous donation match, enthusiastic table hosts, and easy ways to give, such as QR codes and donation envelopes at each table. The success of the first event has already inspired a second: Bingo Night 2026 is set for February 26, and Krista has big plans to make it even more engaging, including a selfie wall inspired by the Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala.

Inspired by Habitat’s Mission

As a real estate professional, Krista understands the transformational power of home.

“Home has always been a place of comfort, safety, and pride for me. It’s also a way to grow wealth. Habitat’s work really resonates with me. It’s about making sure more people have access to that foundation.”

Her passion for housing doesn’t stop at closing deals. Krista has renovated multiple homes, learning how to sheetrock, tile, and handle power tools along the way. Her current home, a 1937 gem, underwent a full renovation—down to the studs and back again. Most recently, she’s been tackling a big outdoor project: replanting her entire yard. “I’ve been tearing out shrubs, planting new ones, and growing grass. It’s been an adventure.”

That same do-it-yourself spirit is what drives Krista’s involvement with Habitat. In addition to hosting her fundraiser, she served on the planning committee for the 2025 Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala, gaining inspiration and momentum for her next big event. This summer, she’s taking another step in her journey by volunteering on a Habitat build site for the first time.

A Welcoming Community

One thing that’s stood out to Krista during her first year with Habitat is the incredible sense of community. “The thing that has reinforced why I want to be involved is that every single person I've come in contact with from Habitat, from the donor community or volunteers, is so genuine and so committed to doing good in this community. It reinforces that these are the kind of people I want to spend my time with.”

She credits Habitat team members for helping bring her Bingo vision to life, noting their enthusiasm and support every step of the way. “They were all in from the start. That kind of spirit is contagious.”

Krista also appreciates that Habitat offers many different ways to get involved—whether it’s on a build site, behind the scenes, or through creative fundraising. Not everyone is going to swing a hammer, but that's okay. People can plan events, host fundraisers, or simply help spread the word about the mission.

Advice for New Supporters

Krista encourages others—especially fellow realtors or professionals with a strong network—to just take the first step.

“Don’t overthink it. Raise your hand and say you’re willing to get involved. The first step is always the hardest, but there will be someone there to guide you.”

She also sees opportunities for people to use their unique skills and platforms to make a difference. “There are so many professionals and solopreneurs that are looking for ways to stay in touch with their networks. For me, I want to make those connection points more meaningful.”

Whether it’s through a Bingo night, a fundraising dinner, or a volunteer shift on the build site, Krista believes in the power of showing up and bringing others along with you. As she looks ahead to her next Habitat build day and her 2026 Bingo fundraiser, Krista is more committed than ever. “I have been just feel really blessed to have connected with the people at Habitat and just can't wait to see what happens next.”
