Every summer, during National Homeownership Month, we celebrate the creativity, resourcefulness, and joy of Habitat homeowners with our annual Homeownership Photo Contest. Each year has a new theme, and this time we went hands-on—literally! We asked homeowners to answer the question: “What DIY project have you done this year?”
The results? Pure inspiration. From clever weekend fixes to ambitious room makeovers, our homeowners shared photos and captions that showed just how much heart and hard work they’ve poured into making their houses truly feel like home. The top entries even scored VISA gift cards, but every submission was a winner in our eyes.
Scroll through all the entries below, and you just might find yourself planning your next project!
"This is our putting green that we made in our backyard. There's three putting holes with flags that were made with Habitat for Humanity handkerchiefs that we got from the children's museum event. This is where the family spends time practicing golf over the summer."
"We converted an entryway closet into a so-called closet mud room."
A Minnesota Vikings bathroom makeover
"I love doing DIY around my house; most recently I have been creating layered wood wall decor to decorate my walls and to give as gifts. Whether working in the garage or the basement, I am always looking to put my creativity to use."
"I've always wanted to create a high end look using wall trim. I was able to have that look after moving into my new home one year ago today!"
"Homeownership to me was like looking at an unfinished closet. You see the potential in the journey, but the finished project reminds you that every step you took to get there was worth it."
"Making a small space feel cozy and home."
"The addition of a bidet to my toilet brings a touch of luxury to my bathroom."
"Fair and carpet square."
"This is my whole family."
"No empty walls!"
"Celebrating the grad with a DYI patio for a graduation party."
"Curb appeal alert!!"
"My first project as a homeowner was painting my front door blue! I had so much fun incorporating my favorite color in my home."
"My hobby."
