Tonia Brinston, a Certified Financial Educator and CEO of SLAP (Sounds Like A Plan) Financial Consulting LLC, works to interrupt generational poverty and empower communities through financial literacy. Fueled by her personal journey of overcoming debt and building wealth, Tonia provides financial education and resources, especially to underserved communities. Her mission is to guide others on their path to financial independence and success, creating a brighter future for individuals and families.
My journey toward financial empowerment started with a deep personal struggle—overcoming debt. Like many, I found myself buried under the weight of financial obligations, grappling with the anxiety and stress that debt inevitably brings. It wasn’t just about the numbers, but also the emotional and psychological toll that financial instability takes. However, through perseverance, education, and support, I began to understand how to get out of debt and build a sustainable path to wealth. This journey inspired me to create SLAP (Sounds Like A Plan) Financial Consulting LLC.
The “why” behind SLAP is rooted in my passion for interrupting the cycle of generational poverty. I’ve seen firsthand how financial trauma can devastate families and communities, especially those who have been systemically marginalized. My goal with SLAP is to provide the tools, knowledge, and support needed to break free from these cycles and build lasting wealth.
At SLAP Financial Consulting, we believe that financial literacy should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. Our programs are designed to demystify complex financial concepts, making them understandable and applicable to real-life situations. We move beyond traditional methods, using interactive workshops, hands-on activities, and real-world scenarios to engage participants. This approach educates and empowers individuals to take control of their financial futures.
Cultural relevance is at the core of SLAP’s mission. Financial education isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution, and culturally specific knowledge is crucial for effective learning. Many of our community members have endured financial trauma—whether through systemic inequities, discriminatory lending practices, or generational poverty. Our programs are designed to level the playing field and meet people where they are, acknowledging and addressing these unique challenges.
A key initiative within SLAP Financial Consulting is our involvement with the Special Purpose Credit Program (SPCP) at Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. This program is specifically designed to support borrowers from underserved communities historically excluded from traditional lending opportunities.
Through Habitat’s SPCP, we offer tailored credit products and financial education that empower individuals to overcome barriers to credit and build a solid financial foundation. Our involvement in SPCP reflects our commitment to creating equitable access to economic resources and ensuring long-term success for our clients.
My connection with Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity began with a meeting at a coffee shop with Shereese Turner, fueled by my deep commitment to community service and financial empowerment. As I grew SLAP Financial Consulting and engaged more with the community, I recognized the connection between affordable housing and financial stability. Twin Cities Habitat's mission to provide safe, affordable housing aligned perfectly with my values and the goals of SLAP. Addressing housing needs became a fundamental step in the broader effort to interrupt generational poverty.
I heard stories directly from families about their struggles with housing and how it impacted their overall financial well-being. It was clear that addressing housing needs is a fundamental step in the broader effort to interrupt generational poverty.
Ultimately, SLAP Financial Consulting was born from my journey of overcoming debt and building wealth. It is grounded in a desire to empower others through education, cultural connection, and community support. By addressing financial trauma and providing the tools for success, SLAP is dedicated to helping individuals and families achieve financial freedom and create a legacy of wealth for future generations.
