Haiti Reflections - November 11, 2011

Highlights of our Carter Work Project experience abound, and they include: the inspirational presence of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter (two of the most caring, hardest-working octogenarians imaginable), 100 houses rising up from their foundations, the joyful parade and singing of the Haitian homeowners on the final build day, the touching home dedications complete with prayers and hugs all around, meeting and working alongside some very compassionate Habitat volunteers, the observance of Veterans Day/Remembrance Day by the large contingent of US and Canadian citizens, the beautiful sunrises and sunsets in Haiti, the immaculate and happy Christianville schoolchildren, the work site visit of Haitian President Michel Martelly, and chatting with Garth and Trisha!

For Barry, a personal highlight was an invitation to sit next to the Carters at the welcome dinner in Atlanta as a representative of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity. Haiti is one of three countries designated as recipients of the TCHFH tithe.

Returning home, we desire to tell the story of the struggle of the Haitian people and the ambitious undertaking of Habitat for Humanity-Haiti in partnership with the Carter Work Project. Ambitious undertakings are necessary in Haiti’s recovery! The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project is scheduled to return to Haiti in November, 2012, where the final 100 homes will be completed. Plans call for completion of 250 homes in the interim. As these plans are finalized for upcoming Habitat work in Haiti, we encourage Twin Cities Habitat volunteers to consider participating in a life-changing experience!
