Come show your support for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and our work in the Frogtown and Rondo neighborhoods! The University Avenue Community Parade is Saturday, August 18, and we need you to come be in the Habitat unit in the parade!
We are a key sponsor of the parade, as it supports our Community Development and Neighborhood Revitalization work in St. Paul. Lineup for the parade is 9 a.m., the parade starts at 10 a.m. and will be at our ending location by 11:30. There, the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT) will be hosting an Open Mic until 4 p.m., when all are invited to stay and hear young talent speak their truths!
The new Green Line Light Rail (also known as the Central Corridor) presents folks in these neighborhoods with opportunities and challenges – and we know that the better organized folks are, the better able they will be to take advantage of the opportunities and meet the challenges. That’s why we’re helping show neighborhood pride and bring folks together. Our main partners, CHAT and the Aurora – St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation, grow out of the Hmong and the African-American community. The north and south sides of University are in different official neighborhoods, but they are brought together by the experience of the street.
We are taking part in this parade because we want the neighborhoods our families live in to be successful. We have more than 40 families within a quarter mile of University between Lexington and the Capitol. These are neighborhoods that have long been battered by the economy, by the construction of Interstate 94, and by the recession. But we focus on the fun, pride and diversity of the neighborhood. Taking part in this parade tells the community that Habitat is a neighborhood partner, and we are here to stay.
If you can be a part of the Habitat parade unit, the lineup will be on Victoria Street, south of Minnehaha Avenue, right next to the old Wilder site that will become the urban Frogtown Farm. Homeowners, volunteers, staff and supporters are all encouraged to join us. Wear something festive, and be a part of unifying University!
