June is National Homeownership Month

June is National Homeownership Month

Twin Cities Habitat, along with many other local and national housing organizations, is gearing up to celebrate National Homeownership Month over the next few weeks. This special month is dedicated to recognizing the many benefits of homeownership to our families, our communities, and our Nation.

“Homeownership serves as an enduring symbol of security and prosperity, and it provides many Americans with a legacy they can pass down to their children and grandchildren,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson in an article on DSNews.com. “During National Homeownership Month, we recognize the abiding value of owning a home, and we rededicate ourselves toward helping hard-working families to find their place in the American dream.”

As an affordable housing organization, we have set big goals to help more local homebuyers achieve their dream of homeownership. Through our strategic plan, Impact 2020, we're planning to more than double the number of homeownership opportunities available to families through our program. With a new partnership and a dedicated staff, we are well on our way to meeting these goals!

In addition to creating new homeownership opportunities, we also work to keep local homeowners in their existing homes through the efforts of our Home Repair Program, Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program, and our new Age in Place Program. And our Neighborhood Revitalization work stresses the importance of building community among all residents of our local neighborhoods. Neighborhood Revitalization research informs the creation of these collaborative projects to raise the quality of life for all members of the community.

In celebration of National Homeownership Month, we'll be sharing homeowner stories, homeownership facts, and the many ways you can get involved to promote homeownership in the Twin Cities.

Here are a few ways you can show your support of homeownership with Habitat this month:

  1. Share your favorite homeowner story on social media
  2. Sign up to volunteer on a home repair or homebuilding site this month
  3. Retweet/regram homeownership facts, news, and stories shared on our Twitter or Instagram feeds during #HomeownershipMonth
  4. Volunteer on June 30 during Jordan Week of Kindness  - one of our collaborative Neighborhood Revitalization projects
  5. Make a gift to support Habitat's mission in your local community
