A Message from Habitat Board Chair Nikki Sorum

A Message from Habitat Board Chair Nikki Sorum

Throughout January, we're showering gratitude on all the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity supporters who make our mission possible. We call it "Thankuary." In our blog this month, you'll see stories about generosity in action from members of the Habitat community. Read this blog for a message of gratitude from Habitat's Board Chair.

Chair, Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors

Two years into this pandemic, who is not convinced of the critical importance of Habitat’s purpose to provide families with safe, affordable housing? Our homes have been our safe sanctuaries during this time in which to learn, play, work, eat, sleep, heal, and love. My heart is so grateful that Twin Cities Habitat has enabled thousands of families to enjoy their own homes, especially during a pandemic. And I grieve for the families that don’t yet benefit from a safe, affordable home.

Thank you to you — our volunteers, donors, and supporters who have sustained Twin Cities Habitat, especially over the last few years. As your Chair of the Habitat Board, I am most grateful for all your work to support Habitat. Thanks to you, your Twin Cities Habitat is enduring the pandemic well. And, with your continued support, Habitat will be positioned to continue its crucial work in the coming years.

My family has supported Habitat for a couple decades now, volunteering on builds, attending Galas, serving on committees and the board, advocating with lawmakers for affordable housing, and donating items to the ReStore Home Improvement Outlets. Reflecting on our time spent on dozens of builds in the Twin Cities and overseas, I’ve always received more than I’ve given. I cherish the memories of inviting my female friends and family to Women Builds – my sister and I spent a very pleasant day caulking the second story of a family’s new home. I’ve met dozens of families, working side by side with future homeowners and hearing their life stories. My kids have helped on build sites, connecting with children from around the world and learning how much we all have in common. At Home Celebrations, I’ve sampled home-cooked delicacies shared by new homeowners and received tours from Habitat kids who are thrilled with their new bedrooms. Habitat has enriched my life and broadened my family’s experiences.

In closing, thank you once again for your help and support in sustaining Twin Cities Habitat as a strong and resilient organization. Your commitment to Habitat is more critical than ever. And, perhaps like me, you’ll conclude you’ve received even more than you’ve given through your Habitat involvement. Thank you!
